In this modern society with new technology being introduced daily, it seems rather ironic that we look to our ancestors more and more for medical riddles we just can’t seem to solve. Having said that, it appears people are turning to yoga for back pain, and with some success too.
It appears strange that we are being encouraged to excert ourselves to fix our problem when it was more than likely the same sort of thing that caused the problem in the first place. Well to dispell any doubts, we have Professor David Torgerson from the University of York who goes on to say;
“In the past when you had backache, you were told to lie down until it passed, these days the main advice is to keep your back active. It seems yoga has more beneficial effects than usual care including other forms of exercise"
Doing yoga is a more effective way for people to become more mobile than treatements offered by GP's (so don't go running to the doctor just yet).
The study at York University found that if done weekly, yoga helped with everyday tasks such as;
Last year 56 year John Aplin that took a 30ft fall while hill-walking. It was feared by the doctors that he would never walk again. Despite this, John was back to work full time within 3 months and he credits this little miracle to Yoga.
"Yoga has a long history of being used to treat back injuries, by holding the body in certain poses, it works by gently building muscles to support the joints" (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1191261/The-yoga-miracle-man.htm)
Now we are not suggesting you get to the nearest ravine and throw yourself off it to try this out, but it certainly seems that giving yoga a try may not be a bad idea at all.
There are yoga classes being schooled everywhere theses days, from your local gyms or school halls.
If like me your a bit aprehensive about tying yourself in knots while the seasoned pros stand on their heads, then get yourself a DVD and do it in the comfort of your own home.The one that I use is Yoga to the rescue, it's specifically for the lower back and at £7.99 its great value.
